Is GTA 6 30 FPS or 60 FPS? What Rockstar has actually said
Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson told content creator Davy Jones that GTA 6's current console builds are running at 30 frames per second, and said he could not confirm or rule out a 60fps mode without the studio's technical team weighing in first. That is a comment about a development build made on August 27, 2026, not a locked launch spec.

How solid is this? Reported by a source with a track record, but not officially confirmed.
What Rockstar actually said
Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson said GTA 6's console builds are currently running at 30 frames per second, and that he could not confirm or rule out a 60fps mode without checking with the studio's technical team first. Nelson made the comment during an in person visit to Rockstar North's Edinburgh studio on August 27, 2026, when Brazilian content creator Davy Jones was allowed to watch more than two hours of live GTA 6 gameplay and speak with Nelson directly. Flow Games, the outlet Jones works with, published the account of the visit the same day, and outlets including Kotaku, GTA BOOM, TechPowerUp, eXputer and technosports picked it up over the following one to two days.

Who Rob Nelson and Davy Jones are
Rob Nelson is Rockstar North's co-studio head and one of the lead developers on GTA 6, a senior enough role that his comments carry real weight even relayed secondhand rather than posted on Rockstar's own newswire. Davy Jones is a Brazilian content creator connected to Flow Games, also credited as GameplayRJ, who was one of a small number of creators Rockstar invited to Edinburgh for a hands off look at the game the same week as the Extended Look's Netflix premiere.

What he did not say
Nelson stopped short of ruling a 60fps mode out. He said the technical team would need to weigh in before he could commit either way, which is a different statement from confirming 30fps as the final, locked launch target. He also said he did not have specifics on resolution or ray tracing implementation to share, according to outlets that relayed the exchange. Rockstar has not published anything on its own newswire addressing frame rate, resolution or ray tracing for any platform.

A development build is not a shipping spec
Every outlet that reported this flagged the same caveat: Nelson was describing how the game runs right now, on a build still in development, about three months before the November 19, 2026 release. Performance on an in progress build routinely changes before a game ships, and again afterward through patches. Treat 30fps as the current state, not a promise about day one, and definitely not a promise about what the game runs at a year after launch.
The PS5 Pro question
Nelson's comments did not carve out an exception for PS5 Pro. eXputer's report on the exchange described the console's situation as genuinely unknown, with no confirmation that Sony's mid generation hardware gets any different treatment than base PS5. Rockstar has not addressed PS5 Pro by name in any official capacity, and nothing in Nelson's comments suggests the more powerful console changes the current 30fps picture.
Rockstar's own track record
This would not be new territory for Rockstar. GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 at 30fps and did not get an official 60fps mode until the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S version arrived in 2022, nearly a decade later. Red Dead Redemption 2 has never received an official 60fps mode on any console. Going by that pattern, a 30fps launch followed by a later performance patch, if one comes at all, would be consistent with how Rockstar has handled its last two open world releases.

Why this became such a big story
Frame rate is one of the most searched GTA 6 questions right now, and Nelson's comment is the first time anyone connected to Rockstar has put a number on it, even informally. That is why a secondhand quote from a creator visit spread as fast as it did. It is worth being precise about what changed and what did not. Nothing here is an official Rockstar statement, and nothing here is a final spec. What changed is that, for the first time, someone at the studio said a number out loud.

What is still unknown
Whether 30fps is the final launch target or changes before November 19, 2026. Whether a 60fps performance mode ships at launch, arrives later as a patch, or never arrives at all. Whether PS5 Pro gets any performance advantage over base PS5. Resolution and ray tracing details on every platform. And anything about PC performance targets, which nobody involved has addressed yet. We will update this post when Rockstar says something on the record.

Has Rockstar officially confirmed GTA 6 runs at 30fps?
Not through its own newswire or a formal statement. The 30fps detail comes from Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson speaking directly to content creator Davy Jones during a studio visit on August 27, 2026, which multiple outlets independently reported.
Will GTA 6 get a 60fps mode?
Unknown. Nelson did not rule it out, but said Rockstar's technical team would need to weigh in before he could confirm one. No 60fps mode has been announced for launch.
Does PS5 Pro run GTA 6 at 60fps?
Not confirmed. Nelson's comments did not single out PS5 Pro for different treatment, and Rockstar has not addressed the console by name.
Did Rockstar do this before with GTA 5?
Yes. GTA 5 launched at 30fps on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 and only got an official 60fps mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S in 2022.
