GTA 6 Extended Look: everything revealed in the 26 minute gameplay reveal

On August 27, 2026, Rockstar premiered GTA VI: An Extended Look on Netflix, about 26 minutes captured entirely in game on PS5. It confirmed character switching between Jason and Lucia, named six regions of Leonida, and showed the reworked wanted system, character customization and a long list of things to do between missions. The game still launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

What the Extended Look actually was

Rockstar and Netflix released GTA VI: An Extended Look on August 27, 2026. It ran roughly 26 minutes and Rockstar says every frame was captured in game on a PlayStation 5, not pre rendered. Netflix had it exclusively for six hours. After that it went up on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 site, free, no subscription needed. If you skipped it because you do not have Netflix, you can still watch the whole thing. This is the most substantial official look at the game so far. Everything below is from that footage or from Rockstar's own material, not from leaks.

Jason and Lucia, and how switching works

GTA 6 has two playable leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and a big chunk of the runtime went to defining their relationship rather than showing off set pieces. The character switch from GTA 5 is back. The clearest demonstration starts with Lucia base jumping off a skyscraper, then the camera pulls up and away over Vice City, travels across the map, and drops back down into Jason somewhere else entirely, spending time with Cal Hampton. Rockstar also showed switching inside missions, with Jason and Lucia handling different halves of the same job. That is a meaningful difference from GTA 5, where switching mid mission was mostly about picking an angle rather than splitting the work.

Read this as direction, not final detail. Rockstar showed the mechanic working; it has not published the rules for when you can and cannot switch.

The six regions of Leonida

Rockstar named six major regions, each with its own environment: Vice City, the streets and beaches at the center of it all. The Leonida Keys, tropical and strung out across the water. Grassrivers, the wetlands. Port Gellhorn, a faded resort town. Ambrosia, the industrial stretch. And Mount Kalaga National Park. On size, be careful what you repeat. Reports out of Rockstar's preview event put Leonida at roughly twice the area of the GTA 5 map. Rockstar itself has not published a square kilometer figure, so treat the two times number as a credible estimate from people who were in the room, not an official spec.

What you can do between missions

The open world material was the part that traveled furthest online, and most of it is small stuff rather than big systems. On screen: playing basketball, kayaking, hunting alligators, lying on the beach, and scrolling an in game social media feed. You can also pet dogs as you walk past them, or tell them off, which is the clip that did the numbers. None of this is a headline feature on its own. Together it is Rockstar signaling that the space between missions is meant to hold you, which is the same thing that kept people in Los Santos for a decade.

The wanted system and customization

The reveal covered a reworked wanted system and character customization for both leads. Rockstar showed enough to confirm both exist and have had real attention, but it did not walk through the mechanics the way it did with character switching. Anyone telling you exactly how many stars there are, how the search cones behave, or what customization actually unlocks is filling gaps that Rockstar left open. We will update this post when Rockstar publishes specifics rather than guessing now.

Why it landed when it did

Context matters here. In the week before the premiere, a group calling itself CyberLeek put out GTA 6 gameplay clips and claimed to have a playable build. Rockstar did not move the premiere. It stayed publicly quiet about the leak, ran copyright takedowns, and kept paying to promote the August 27 date. Take-Two has since pursued DMCA subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord seeking account data to identify who is behind CyberLeek. The short version: the leaks did not change the plan. November 19, 2026 is still the release date, on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

What we still do not know

No PC version has been dated. Rockstar has not given a map size in square kilometers, has not detailed the wanted system's rules, and has said nothing concrete about online. We are not going to invent any of it. When Rockstar publishes it, this post gets updated with the date on it.
