Rockstar and Netflix premiered GTA VI: An Extended Look on August 27, 2026. GTA BOOM's same day report puts the runtime at about 26 minutes, all of it, per Netflix's own listing, "captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5." Netflix carried it as an exclusive for the first six hours, from 3 PM ET, before it went free on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 site at 9 PM ET. Character customization got one clear moment in that runtime. TheGamer's recap of the reveal, published the same afternoon by George Foster, captions a frame from the footage "Jason and Lucia posing outside of a salon in GTA 6," which confirms a salon storefront appeared on screen. The caption does not say either of them went inside, and no outlet we found describes a haircut, a manicure or anything else happening in the shop. Beyond that single frame, the Extended Look did not linger on customization the way it lingered on character switching or the wanted system. It did not show a menu, a price, or a list of options.
Your lifestyle changes how Jason and Lucia look
The most detailed customization reporting out of the reveal is not about a shop at all. Red Bull's August 28, 2026 recap, byline Phil Briel, describes an appearance system tied to how you actually play: "fast food and excessive drinking will cause you to gain visible weight," while "regular exercise builds muscle." Sleep and stress leave marks too: "all-night gaming sessions and constant stress leave their mark on your face," and spend too long running from the police and "you'll look exhausted and haggard." That is a different kind of customization than picking a haircut. Games as far back as GTA San Andreas tracked a hidden fitness stat; this is Rockstar making the number visible on your character's face and body without you ever opening a menu for it.
Clothes double as a way to dodge the police
Dexerto's August 27, 2026 recap, byline Connor Bennett, reports a second appearance mechanic with a real gameplay function: "you will also be able to store clothes and weapons in cars, which will allow you to change up your look as the cops start searching for you." That lines up with what this site has already reported about GTA 6's wanted system: Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has said police can know what a character looks like and what they are wearing, part of a description based wanted system rather than a generic alert (full breakdown in our wanted system explainer). Engadget's August 28, 2026 recap, byline Dave Meikleham, adds a UI detail: onscreen icons track the pair's health, wardrobe and vehicle condition, a design lineage the piece traces back to Red Dead Redemption 2. The same article notes RDR2 style face coverings, accessible through an item wheel, for use during robberies. Put together, changing your appearance in GTA 6 is not just cosmetic, it is a tool for managing how much the police know about you.
Three shops, and none of them are in the Standard Edition
The specific, named customization shops did not come from the Extended Look at all. They came from Rockstar's pre-order rollout on June 24 and 25, 2026, more than two months earlier. Shacknews, byline Aidan O'Brien, published the full breakdown on June 24: Sara's Unisex Salon offers "facial hair for Jason and makeup and nails for Lucia," Stock 305 is billed as "Stockyard's premiere destination for elevated streetwear," and Electric Fang Tattoo carries "over 50 signature tattoos for both Jason and Lucia, all designed by the artist collective FAILE." Each of the three carries the same line, per Shacknews: "Only open for business with the Ultimate Edition." Vice's Brent Koepp corroborated the same list the same day, and Notebookcheck independently confirmed it on June 25. None of the three are included with the $79.99 Standard Edition. Fans noticed, and Rockstar hasn't clarified the Standard Edition side
Notebookcheck's June 25, 2026 piece, byline Marius Müller, is the most useful account of the reaction because it distinguishes what is confirmed from what is debated. Some Reddit users called the shop split a "red flag" over "aggressive monetization," noting it appears to be the first time Rockstar has locked actual in-game locations, rather than purely cosmetic items, behind a paid tier. Other Reddit users pushed back, arguing the panic is overblown because Standard Edition will still have its own ordinary shops, and the Ultimate tier just layers a handful of premium locations on top. Notebookcheck reports both readings and does not resolve which is correct, because Rockstar has not said. We are not going to resolve it either. It is an open question, not a confirmed detail.
Is the salon in the Extended Look Sara's Unisex Salon?
This is worth being precise about, because it would be easy to assume the salon Jason and Lucia are pictured outside of is the Ultimate Edition exclusive Sara's Unisex Salon revealed two months earlier. No outlet we found actually identifies the salon by name, and none describe either character going inside it. It could be Sara's Unisex Salon. It could be an ordinary salon available to every player, consistent with the Reddit theory that Standard Edition keeps its own regular shops. We have not found a source that settles it, so we are not going to state it as fact either way.
How this compares to GTA 5
GTA 5 shipped barbershops, clothing stores like Ponsonbys and Suburban, and tattoo parlors as ordinary systems available to every player from the start, no separate purchase required. Whatever GTA 6 turns out to ship with for Standard Edition buyers, at least three specialty storefronts, a salon, a clothing store and a tattoo parlor, are confirmed gated behind a $20 premium tier that a chunk of Rockstar's own audience is already calling out on Reddit. That is a real change in structure from prior entries, independent of how generous the Standard Edition equivalents turn out to be.
What we still don't know
Rockstar has not published a hairstyle, tattoo or clothing item count for either edition. It has not detailed how customization items are unlocked or priced in the game's own economy. It has not said whether Standard Edition includes any non exclusive salon, clothing store or tattoo parlor equivalents, the exact question the June 25 Reddit debate turns on. Nothing shown so far points to a from scratch character creator. Every customization detail reported, the lifestyle system, the salon frame, the three Ultimate shops, applies to the two fixed leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, not a player built character. And Rockstar has said nothing about customization in any online mode, because it has not detailed an online mode at all. We will update this post when that changes.
