GTA 6 release date: why November 19 is holding despite the leaks

As of September 2026, GTA 6 still launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Neither the CyberLeek leaks in August nor Take-Two's subpoenas over them moved the date. Rockstar addressed the leaks directly on August 26 and reaffirmed November 19, preloads are confirmed to start November 12, and on an August 7 earnings call Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick called pre-order demand unprecedented and astonishing while leaving full year financial guidance unchanged.

Where the date actually stands

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. That has not changed since our release date guide was last updated in July, and it has not changed through a month that gave Rockstar plenty of reasons to move it if it were going to. Between mid August and early September, GTA 6 went through an unauthorized gameplay leak under the name CyberLeek, a DMCA subpoena fight between Take-Two and Microsoft and Discord, an official 26 minute gameplay reveal on Netflix, and a quarterly earnings call. We have covered each of those on their own. This post is about the one thing that did not move through any of it: the date.

Rockstar addressed the leaks directly, and did not blink

On August 26, 2026, a day before the Extended Look premiered on Netflix, Rockstar put out a statement directly addressing the leaked footage. It said having gameplay videos leak that way "has been heartbreaking for our team," and added, "while it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19." That is a studio confirming a date in the same breath as it addresses a leak, not hedging it. Rockstar also acknowledged development had taken longer than it wanted, without attaching that admission to any change in the date. The Extended Look went ahead on schedule the next day.

What Take-Two told investors on August 7

Two and a half weeks before that statement, Take-Two held its first quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call, its first financial update covering the pre-order window that opened June 25. CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked directly about GTA 6 demand and said: "The level of pre-orders is unprecedented and astonishing, and we're very grateful for that." Asked whether pre-orders had beaten Take-Two's own internal forecasts, Zelnick said they had, using the word "vastly." He declined to give an actual number, on the call and separately to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, and explained why: some of that early demand could be people buying now who would have bought anyway, pulled forward rather than net new. "Nobody knows the demand curve," he said, because a launch of this size has not happened before at the company or, in his framing, in the industry.

Zelnick's caution is worth taking seriously. Enthusiastic pre-order language and a confirmed release date are two different signals, and only one of them is a guess about the future.

The number Take-Two did not raise

Here is the detail that is easy to miss if you only read the pull quote. Take-Two's first quarter net bookings came in at $1.39 billion, with net revenue of $1.53 billion and a GAAP net loss of $34.1 million, or $0.18 a share. Despite calling GTA 6 pre-orders unprecedented, the company kept its full year fiscal 2027 net bookings outlook at $8.0 to $8.2 billion, the same range it had already given. Its second quarter projection of $1.62 billion to $1.67 billion in net bookings also landed below what analysts had modeled, which was closer to $1.85 billion. None of that says anything bad about the November 19 date. It does say Take-Two is not letting pre-order enthusiasm talk it into a rosier forecast before it has sales data to back it up, which is the same caution Zelnick described on the call.

The preload date is its own signal

Separately from the earnings call, Rockstar has confirmed that preloading starts November 12, 2026, exactly one week before launch, on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Digital pre-orders and physical copies, which ship with a download code rather than a disc, both get access on the same day. Studios set preload windows to keep launch day servers from buckling under everyone trying to download the game at once. That is not the kind of logistics a publisher lines up for a date it expects to slip. It is a small detail next to a leak or a subpoena, but it points the same direction as everything else here.

Why this date is different from the last one

GTA 6 already slipped once, off an original 2025 window, before Rockstar set November 19, 2026. The difference now is repetition under pressure. A studio that is quietly worried about a ship date does not typically issue a public statement addressing a leak by name and restate that date in the same paragraph, and a publisher that is worried about a date does not typically confirm preload logistics for it or leave its full year guidance sitting on that date's launch quarter. None of that is a guarantee. It is a pattern of a company acting like the date is fixed, across a legal fight, a leak, an earnings call and a marketing reveal, without a single one of those moments producing a hedge.

What we still do not know

Take-Two has not given an actual pre-order number, and has explicitly declined to say how much of the demand is pulled forward versus new. Whether the second quarter guidance coming in under analyst expectations has anything to do with GTA 6 specifically, or with the rest of Take-Two's slate, has not been broken out publicly. There is still no PC release date, price or system requirements. And whether Microsoft and Discord have complied with, narrowed or challenged Take-Two's DMCA subpoenas over the CyberLeek leaks has not been publicly resolved. We are not going to guess at any of it. This post gets updated if Rockstar or Take-Two changes anything about the date itself.

FAQ

Has GTA 6 been delayed again?

No. As of September 2026 the date is still November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Rockstar reaffirmed it directly in an August 26 statement addressing the CyberLeek leaks.

What did Take-Two say about GTA 6 pre-orders?

On its August 7, 2026 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick called pre-order demand "unprecedented and astonishing" and said it had "vastly" beaten internal forecasts, but declined to give a number, saying nobody knows yet how much of it is pulled forward demand.

When can I preload GTA 6?

Rockstar has confirmed preloading starts November 12, 2026, one week before launch, for both digital and physical copies on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

Did the CyberLeek leaks or the Take-Two subpoenas delay GTA 6?

No. Rockstar kept its August 27 Extended Look premiere on schedule and addressed the leaks publicly on August 26 without changing the release date. The subpoenas Take-Two filed against Microsoft and Discord are a separate legal effort to identify the leaker, not a factor in the game's launch date.
