GTA 6 Leonida Keys: everything Rockstar has actually shown

The Leonida Keys are the tropical island chain at the southern tip of GTA 6's map, Rockstar's version of the real Florida Keys, and the region where protagonist Jason Duval's story starts before the game's central heist pulls him toward Vice City. Rockstar's own postcard copy for the region reads: "The dress code is casual, the bars are loaded. Life in this tropical archipelago isn't flashy but it's easy," and warns that visitors are "right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America."

What the Leonida Keys actually is

The Leonida Keys are one of six regions Rockstar has named inside the state of Leonida, alongside Vice City, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park, all named in Rockstar's second trailer on May 6, 2025. They sit at the very southern tip of the map, in Mariana County, an archipelago of low islands linked to the mainland by a causeway that stands in for the real Overseas Highway running through the actual Florida Keys. Rockstar's own postcard copy for the region is short and specific: "The dress code is casual, the bars are loaded. Life in this tropical archipelago isn't flashy but it's easy." It follows with a warning that undercuts the postcard vibe: "Get your buzz on and pull up a deck chair but look out, you are right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America." For how the Keys fit into the rest of Leonida's map, this site has a separate region by region breakdown. This post stays inside the Keys themselves.

Jason Duval's story starts here

The Leonida Keys are not just scenery. They are where GTA 6's story begins for Jason Duval, one of the game's two protagonists. Rockstar's official character bio, published alongside the second trailer on May 6, 2025, says Jason "grew up around grifters and crooks," did a stint in the Army to shake off a troubled adolescence, and ended up in the Leonida Keys working for local drug runners. The bio's own line for him is blunt: "Jason wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder." Specifically, Jason lives on Key Lento, a town in the Keys that first appeared in that second trailer and in official screenshots since. He is not paying for it either: Rockstar's bio for Brian Heder, the smuggler who owns the property, says Brian is "letting Jason live rent free at one of his properties, so long as he helps with local shakedowns, and stops by for Lori's sangria once in a while." Once Lucia Caminos gets out of Leonida Penitentiary, she moves in with him there too.

Brian Heder's boat yard, and the people around it

Brian Heder runs the smuggling operation Jason works for out of Brian's Boat Works & Marina, a business Rockstar's official bio describes in noir shorthand: he "looks like a Leonida beach bum but moves like a great white shark," a "classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys" who has "been around long enough to let others do his dirty work." He is on his third wife, Lori, who the same bio credits with the sangria Jason gets invited round for. The other named face in Jason's orbit is Cal Hampton, described in Rockstar's bio as Jason's friend and "a fellow associate of Brian's," who spends most of his time at home "snooping on Coast Guard comms with a few beers and some private browser tabs open." His own bio line for his outlook is blunt: "The psychopaths are in charge, get used to it." Official art shows him in a Rusty Anchor t-shirt, named for the bar that shows up elsewhere in the region.

Hurricane Roxy and the region's backstory

The Rusty Anchor bar itself is where Rockstar planted one of the Keys' more specific pieces of world building. A weathered, hand painted sign inside it, visible at the 1:31 mark of the May 2025 trailer, reads "Hurricane Roxy was this strong," implying the region took a direct hit from a major storm at some point before the game's events. It reads as a nod to Hurricane Irma, the real category 5 storm that tore through the actual Florida Keys in September 2017, flattening trailer parks and marinas along the same stretch of coast Rockstar is recreating. Rockstar has not built a mission or a marketing beat around Hurricane Roxy beyond that sign. It is one detail in one bar, and anything past that sentence is inference, not confirmation.

Life on the water

Away from the story beats, the Keys are built around the water. Rockstar's official screenshots and the August 27, 2026 Extended Look show divers working coral sites, jet skis cutting between islands, a seaplane as a background detail, and iguanas sunning themselves near waterfront houses, all consistent with the beach bar, boat heavy pitch of the postcard copy. None of this has been broken down mission by mission. What exists so far is atmosphere: a region built for boats and open water rather than the street level density Rockstar showed off for Vice City in the same Extended Look.

The islands and bridges Rockstar has actually named

Rockstar's own material names three specific islands in the chain: East Key, Goose Key and Key Lento, the last of which is where Jason lives. They are connected to the mainland and to each other by a causeway standing in for the real Overseas Highway, including at least two unnamed bridges built to resemble the real Bahia Honda Rail Bridge and the newer Bahia Honda Bridge that carry US 1 through the actual Florida Keys today. That is a shorter, more specific list than the sprawling fan maps that circulate online. Treat anything beyond these three named islands as a guess dressed up as a map.

What is still unknown

Rockstar has not said how much of the Leonida Keys is actually drivable and explorable at launch versus background scenery seen only in trailers and screenshots. Nor has it detailed how Jason's arrangement with Brian Heder plays out once the story's central heist goes wrong and pulls him toward Vice City. Whether Cal Hampton, Lori Heder or the Rusty Anchor come back later in the campaign, or are Keys only faces who never leave the region, has not been said either. The precise size of the Leonida Keys relative to the rest of Leonida has not been published. Rockstar has only offered a state-wide size comparison for all of Leonida, covered in this site's separate map regions guide, not a breakdown by individual region.
