ScreenRant's reporting on the announcement adds a detail Rockstar's own release does not spell out as plainly: preloading itself rolls out at midnight local time, the same region by region pattern the November 19 launch uses, rather than unlocking everywhere at once. The files themselves stay locked. You can download the full game starting November 12, but nothing unlocks until the regional launch windows Rockstar and Sony have set for November 19, so preloading buys you time, not early access.
The physical edition does not have a disc
The retail box for GTA 6 does not contain a Blu-ray disc. Rockstar's own announcement states it plainly: the physical version contains a download code inside the box, and a disc will not be included. You redeem that code through the PlayStation Store or Xbox digital storefront, and it downloads the same full game a digital buyer gets. Once you redeem the code, it is tied to your account the way any digital download is. There is no functioning resale market for a GTA 6 physical copy after that code has been used, since there is no disc to pass along and the game itself lives on your account, not in the box.
How much storage you actually need
Rockstar has not published an official install size for any platform, on PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. Every figure circulating is an estimate built from GTA 5's roughly 110GB footprint and the scale of what Rockstar has shown of Leonida so far. GTA BOOM's working estimate, current as of late August 2026, puts the base install at 150GB to 200GB, with a day one patch adding another 20GB to 50GB on top, for a practical planning number of up to 250GB. That matters most on Xbox Series S, which has roughly 364GB of usable storage out of the box, meaning a 200GB install alone could eat more than half the console before the day one patch even lands. PS5's roughly 667GB of usable storage and Xbox Series X's roughly 800GB have more room to spare, but neither is unlimited once other games are already installed.
What preloading gets you on launch day
The practical value of preloading is avoiding a queue. GTA 6 is rolling out across 15 regional time zones on November 19, and every one of those windows is going to have a large share of that region's players trying to download and patch the game at once if they have not preloaded already. Starting the download on November 12 instead means you are ready to play the moment your region's window opens, rather than watching a progress bar while everyone around you gets a head start. This is also why the day one patch matters. Preloading gets the base install done early, but Rockstar has not said whether the day one patch itself becomes available for early download too, or whether it only unlocks alongside the game at launch. Budget time for it either way.
What else comes with a pre-order
Every GTA 6 pre-order, and any purchase made before November 20, 2026, includes the Vintage Vice City Pack, a set of items themed around the game's 1980s inspired aesthetic, per Rockstar's own announcement. Digital pre-orders specifically also get a free month of GTA+, Rockstar's subscription service. Neither bonus is tied to preloading itself, they come from pre-ordering or buying early, but both were confirmed in the same June 24, 2026 announcement that set the preload date.
What we still do not know
Rockstar has not published an official file size for GTA 6 on any platform, so every storage figure in circulation, including the 150GB to 250GB range above, remains an industry estimate rather than a confirmed number. Rockstar has also not detailed whether the day one patch can be preloaded ahead of November 19 or only downloads at launch.
