GTA 6 release times by region, and the New Zealand early access trick
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 in a staggered rollout of 15 regional windows, each unlocking at midnight local time, the same pattern Rockstar used for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. New Zealand goes first at 11:00 UTC on November 18, 2026, and the United States unlocks nationwide at midnight Eastern, meaning West Coast players get in around 9pm PT on November 18, roughly 18 hours after New Zealand. Some players are trying to reach New Zealand's PlayStation Store or Xbox region early to play ahead of their own country's unlock, which carries real cost and real risk.

How solid is this? Reported by a source with a track record, but not officially confirmed.
The schedule, and where it comes from
GTA 6 does not launch at one global moment. Rockstar is repeating the midnight local rollout it used for GTA 5 in 2013 and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018: the game unlocks at 12:00am in each region's own time zone, so players in different countries start playing at different points on the clock. The exact windows were not announced by Rockstar directly. GTAVice.net, a Grand Theft Auto fan site not to be confused with the general news outlet Vice, combed through PlayStation Store regional listings and published the original 15 window, 63 country breakdown on September 7, 2026. Kotaku, Vice, DualShockers, GTA BOOM and IBTimes UK reported the same schedule on September 7 and 8, 2026, and none of them found a mismatch, which is about as close to confirmation as a storefront timestamp gets before Rockstar says something itself. Treat this as reliable but not locked in stone. It comes from Sony's own store metadata, not a press release, and that metadata could still change before November 19.

New Zealand goes first, the Americas go last
New Zealand unlocks at 11:00 UTC on November 18, which is midnight on November 19 in Auckland and Wellington, and works out to 3am Pacific Time or 6am Eastern Time on November 18 for anyone tracking it from the US. Australia and Japan follow within a few hours, then Southeast Asia, India, the Gulf states, Eastern Europe, Central Europe and the UK, which unlocks at 00:00 UTC on November 19. The Americas are last. Most of South America unlocks around 3am to 4am UTC on November 19. The US, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru unlock together at 05:00 UTC, which is midnight Eastern on November 19, so the West Coast gets in at 9pm Pacific on November 18 rather than waiting for its own midnight. Mexico and Central America close out the list at 06:00 UTC on November 19, the very last window, 19 hours after New Zealand opened.

Why the US is nearly last
Rockstar is using one nationwide unlock time for the US and Canada, midnight Eastern, rather than letting each US time zone unlock at its own local midnight the way most other countries do. That is why Kotaku's framing landed the way it did: the US, despite being Rockstar's home market, is one of the last places in the world to get in, and West Coast players specifically watch people three time zones over start playing first. The gap between New Zealand's unlock and the US nationwide unlock is 18 hours. Between New Zealand and the very last window, Mexico and Central America, it is 19 hours. If you are trying to avoid spoilers on launch day, budget for most of a full day where the game is live somewhere in the world before it is live for you.

The New Zealand trick, explained
A workaround circulating since early September lets some players reach New Zealand's midnight instead of waiting for their own. The details differ by platform. On Xbox Series X and S, changing the console's location to New Zealand in system settings reportedly lets a player reach that store's listed unlock window, since Xbox does not region lock game codes the way PlayStation does. Multiple outlets report this works in principle, but none has confirmed it actually tracks New Zealand's specific GTA 6 window rather than some other regional time. On PS5, it takes more. Sony does not allow an existing account's country or region to be changed once it is set, so reaching the New Zealand store requires creating a brand new PSN account registered to New Zealand, plus either a New Zealand payment method or New Zealand PlayStation Store credit, then buying GTA 6 through that account and store. GTA Boom also flags a specific failure mode: a code bought through one region's store may simply not activate on an account registered somewhere else, so this is not a guaranteed 18 hour head start even for players willing to do all of it.

What it actually costs, and the real risk
GTA 6 costs more in New Zealand dollars than the US price once converted, so the early access comes with a real markup on top of the hassle of setting up a second account and a foreign payment method. Vice frames the math as not clearly favoring most players outside New Zealand once that markup and the setup hassle are weighed against an 18 hour head start. IBTimes UK does not weigh the cost, but is the outlet most explicit that the workaround should be checked against each platform's current terms before anyone tries it. On risk: creating a second PSN account tied to another country is common and Sony has tolerated it for years, for people who move countries or simply want access to a region's store, so it is not by itself the kind of thing PSN forums report players getting banned for. That is different from Sony promising nothing will happen. The closer precedent is Microsoft, which handed out indefinite Xbox account suspensions starting in March 2025 to players who used VPNs to buy games at a cheaper region's price, citing exploitation of price differences between regions, according to Pure Xbox's reporting. At least one banned player had their account reinstated within days, but Microsoft's own language shows platform holders will act against region gaming when it affects their storefront economics. Nobody has reported Sony doing the same for early access specifically, but that is not the same as confirmed safe.

Is the New Zealand trick worth it
For someone who already owns a PS5 with a spare hour to set up a second account, an Xbox owner just flipping a settings menu, or anyone building a launch day stream, 18 hours might be worth chasing. For most players, the honest answer is no: you save less than a day, you pay more for the game, and you take on account risk that nobody, including Sony, has fully clarified. Rockstar has not commented on the trick or the leaked schedule, and there is no indication it plans to close the loophole before November 19. If you just want to avoid spoilers, the practical move is simpler than any of this: assume GTA 6 content is public online starting at 11:00 UTC on November 18, and manage your own feeds accordingly rather than trying to beat the clock.
What we still do not know
Rockstar has not published its own worldwide release time chart, so everything above is inferred from PlayStation Store listings as they stood in early September 2026, not confirmed by Rockstar or Sony directly, and it could still move before launch. Nobody has confirmed whether Xbox's regional storefront will match the PlayStation schedule exactly, since Xbox does not use the same region lock system. And nobody has reported a single documented case, on PSN or Xbox, of an account actually being banned or suspended specifically for using the New Zealand method for GTA 6, which cuts both ways: the risk is unproven, not zero.

What time does GTA 6 unlock in the US?
The US and Canada unlock together at midnight Eastern time on November 19, 2026, which is 05:00 UTC. That means the West Coast gets in around 9pm Pacific on November 18 rather than waiting for its own local midnight.
Which region gets GTA 6 first?
New Zealand, at 00:00 NZDT on November 19, 2026, which is 11:00 UTC on November 18. It is the first of 15 regional unlock windows identified from PlayStation Store listings.
Does the New Zealand PS5 trick actually work for GTA 6?
It requires creating a brand new PSN account registered to New Zealand and buying the game through New Zealand's PlayStation Store, since Sony will not let you change an existing account's region. Even then, a mismatched code may not activate, so it is not a guaranteed head start.
Can I get banned for using the New Zealand trick?
No confirmed cases have been reported on PSN specifically. Microsoft did suspend Xbox accounts in March 2025 for exploiting regional price differences via VPN, reinstating at least one within days, which shows platform holders will act on region gaming when it suits them, even though that case was about pricing rather than early access.
