GTA 6 vs GTA 5: everything that has actually changed

GTA 6 replaces GTA 5's three strangers, Michael, Franklin and Trevor, with two leads who work together, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, on a map Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson says is roughly twice the size of Los Santos and Blaine County. The wanted system goes from five stars to six, NPCs get more than ten times as many animations, and most of what has changed comes from Rockstar's own August 27, 2026 Extended Look and on record developer comparisons rather than leaks.

Two leads working together, not three strangers

GTA 5 ran on three separate criminals, Michael, Franklin and Trevor, whose stories crossed but who mostly lived apart. GTA 6 swaps that for Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple who spend most of the game working as a pair rather than as three people with separate lives. Rockstar's Extended Look showed switching in both free roam and inside missions, letting one character drive while the other shoots or scrolls the phone in the passenger seat. Rockstar has also said some story sections still lock the player to one character's perspective, so the pairing is not absolute.

A map Rockstar's own developer calls twice the size

GTA 5 was Los Santos and the surrounding Blaine County countryside. GTA 6 is Leonida, a fictional Florida built around Vice City and five other named regions: the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's co-studio head and head of development, told content creator TGG during a preview visit to the studio's Edinburgh office that Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. That is a developer's on record comparison, not a published square kilometer figure. Rockstar has never released an exact number for either game's map, so treat the ratio as the real information and any square mile conversion floating around online as someone else's math layered on top of it.

Six wanted stars instead of five, and police that build a description

GTA 5 used a five star system that mostly reacted to a generic alert level once it was triggered. GTA 6 goes back to six stars, a level Rockstar had not used since the Chinatown Wars era, and rebuilds what the stars actually track. Rob Nelson has said police in GTA 6 build a description of a suspect: what they look like, what they are wearing, what vehicle they are using, and whether Jason and Lucia are together. Changing clothes, ditching a flagged car or splitting up can throw off a search in a way that simply outrunning the chase radius could in GTA 5. A separate Criminal Profile system, also detailed around the Extended Look, tracks how violently or cleanly a player commits crimes over time, running alongside the star meter rather than replacing it.

More than ten times the NPC animations

Rockstar told The New York Times, in a report published August 27, 2026, that GTA 6 uses well over 600,000 character animations. GTA 5 had 55,000. Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's own 2018 game, had roughly 300,000, so GTA 6 is also about double its immediate predecessor. Rockstar has said the increase comes from a dedicated team built specifically to make NPCs behave less like repeating extras and more like individuals, achieved without generative AI. Outlets covering the Extended Look describe the practical result as cover mechanics with cleaner transitions between different heights of cover, a peek and shoot option, and combat that flows between movement, cover and character switching more smoothly than GTA 5's snap to cover system did.

A phone that does more than call people

GTA 5's phone made calls, browsed a handful of static in-game websites like Bleeter and Lifeinvader, and triggered missions. GTA 6's phone, based on Rockstar's Extended Look and Dazed magazine's August 26, 2026 preview, adds a working social media feed that follows storylines, such as the rise of a fictional girl group, the Real Dimez, as they actually happen rather than sitting as fixed text. Snapmatic, GTA 5's photo sharing app, returns. Livestreaming is also now a visible gameplay system: the Extended Look follows a streamer character, Camilo, performing a stunt while fleeing police, with an on screen option to view the livestream and expand its chat.

Small time crime got bigger

GTA 5 let players rob convenience stores as a quick side activity with barely any variation between them. SVG's coverage of the Extended Look describes GTA 6 expanding that: a shim for slow, quiet car theft or a smashed window for a faster, noisier one, plus multiple named robbery scenarios shown on screen, including convenience stores, gas stations and phone shops. Notebookcheck's breakdown of the nearly three hour gameplay session Rockstar showed press adds jewelry stores to that list, with one store's loot reportedly worth $15,000 to $40,000, scaling up toward the bank heists that were always GTA 5's biggest job. Rockstar has not detailed a full economy system beyond what appeared on screen, so treat the range of robbery types as confirmed and anything about a deeper money laundering or business ownership system as still unannounced.

More to do between jobs

GTA 5 had activities like golf, tennis, yoga and darts scattered around Los Santos. GTA 6's Extended Look showed a longer list on screen: basketball, kayaking, scuba diving, base jumping, alligator hunting, jet skiing, dirt bike and stock car racing, and a backyard wrestling match Rockstar has not confirmed is a playable system rather than a one off scene. Two named car customization shops, Rideout Customs and One Eyed Willie's Mod Shop, are confirmed exclusive to the $99.99 Ultimate Edition, alongside a hair salon, a clothing store and a tattoo shop. GTA 5's mod shops were available to every player regardless of which edition they bought, so this edition split is itself a change, not just an addition.

No PC version yet, and a higher price

GTA 5 launched on consoles in September 2013 at $59.99 and did not reach PC until April 2015, a year and a half later. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S only, at $79.99 for the Standard Edition or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, and Rockstar's own Extended Look did not mention a PC version at all. Going by how long GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 took to reach PC after their console launches, a PC version of GTA 6 is likely eventually, but there is no announced date and probably not one for well over a year after the console launch.

What we still do not know

Rockstar has not published an exact map size in square kilometers or miles for either game, has not confirmed a full weapon or vehicle list, has not said whether hurricanes or other severe weather are in the finished game, and has not announced a PC release window. Most of what separates GTA 6 from GTA 5 on paper right now comes from a single 26 minute Extended Look plus a handful of on record developer interviews, not a finished game anyone outside Rockstar has played.
