Rivals Update 22: the Wildcat SMG and the ranked overhaul, explained

Rivals Update 22 went live at 9 p.m. ET on September 4, 2026 and runs through midnight ET on September 26. Its centerpiece is the Wildcat, an SMG and the first weapon in Rivals with visible recoil, which unlocks for 35 keys through normal play with no Robux required. The update also reworks ranked mode: matchmaking is now region locked, account verification is tighter, the ELO formula weighs high level wins more precisely instead of treating everyone above 3,600 ELO the same, and daily ELO Shields no longer apply to players ranked Platinum I or above.

What actually shipped on September 4

Nosniy Games, the studio behind Rivals, announced the update on its official X account, calling it a new standard weapon arriving for the first time in nearly two years and pointing players to sign up for the in game event. Update 22 went live at 9 p.m. ET on September 4, 2026 (8 p.m. CT, 6 p.m. PT) and is scheduled to run until midnight ET on September 26, roughly a three week window. It closes out the Summer Event that Update 21 ran earlier this year. The update is live now, which means everything below is drawn from the shipped patch and the developer's own account, not a roadmap or a leak.

The Wildcat: Rivals' first weapon with real recoil

The headline addition is the Wildcat, a fully automatic Standard category SMG. What sets it apart from every weapon that came before it is recoil: the Wildcat is the first gun in Rivals where sustained fire actually climbs, and players have to pull the aim down to compensate the way shooters on other platforms have worked for years. It also reloads unevenly. The Wildcat uses a pair of magazines taped together, so the first reload is quick and the second is roughly twice as long, a real tradeoff during a firefight rather than a cosmetic animation difference.

Wildcat stats, in full

The numbers matter more than the label here. The Wildcat deals 9 damage up to 30 studs, then falls off to 2.2 damage by 90 studs, with a 0.06 second cooldown between shots. It holds 24 rounds per magazine for 96 total ammo, has a spread of 3.0 degrees, and carries a 0.45 second equip cooldown. The alternating reload runs 1 second on the quick cycle and 2 seconds on the long one. That damage curve is steep. The Wildcat holds its full damage only at close range and drops off hard by medium distance, which puts it in direct competition with Rivals' existing close quarters picks rather than replacing a long range weapon.

How to unlock it, and what the contract track pays out

The Wildcat costs 35 keys in the weapons menu, and keys are earned free through normal contract play, so no purchase is required to get it. It is also available through a limited time Super Starter Bundle for players who would rather skip the grind. Once unlocked, the Wildcat runs its own two contract tracks in parallel, and both only progress while the Wildcat is the weapon actually in use. Getting 5 kills or playing it for 5 minutes pays 1 key. Reaching 20 kills or 20 minutes with it unlocks a Charm Capsule. The kills track keeps paying out well past that, up to a Diamond Hands finisher at 30,000 kills and a Dark Matter wrap at 40,000, while the playtime track tops out with a Chibi Wildcat charm at 72 hours.

Ranked mode's biggest changes in a year

Update 22 tightens account verification for ranked play, requiring players to complete an email, phone, or age check option shown directly in their Ranked panel rather than assuming one universal requirement applies to everyone. Matchmaking is also now region locked, meaning ranked queues only match players within the same region instead of pulling from a global pool. The tradeoff is longer queue times in less populated regions or during off peak hours, which Rivals itself flags as an expected side effect rather than a bug.

The ELO formula got more honest

Before Update 22, Rivals treated every player above 3,600 ELO, the threshold for its Nemesis rank, as functionally equal for matchmaking purposes. The new formula accounts for each player's actual rating instead, which should make matches inside the top tier less lopsided. The update also changes what a win actually pays. A heavily favored win, one where the outcome was never really in doubt, can now award 0 ELO and hand out a cosmetic reward instead of rating. And daily ELO Shields, which protect a player from losing rating in one match per day and do not stack, no longer apply to anyone ranked Platinum I or higher. Rivals' own reasoning is that the Shield exists to keep newer players willing to queue Ranked at all, and it serves no purpose once someone is already well past that point.

Codes still work the same way

Update 22 did not change how Rivals codes function. As of September 8, active codes were still paying out keys and community wraps the normal way, the same currency the Wildcat's contract track uses. Expect codes to keep rotating in and out without warning, as they always have, so check current listings before assuming an older code still works.

What we still don't know

Nosniy Games has not published exact drop odds for the rarer Wildcat cosmetics beyond the contract milestones listed above, and it has not said whether the weapon will get balance changes once more players have logged real hours with it. The studio also has not detailed every regional boundary the new matchmaking lock uses, or whether the queue time tradeoff will ease once the event's player surge settles down. We will update this post if Nosniy Games clarifies any of it.
